The east alley in downtown Jefferson just north of Doc’s Stadium, now known as Doc’s Alley, is being given a facelift by volunteers of Jefferson Matters: Main Street.
A group of 10 people spent time Sunday and Monday scraping and painting the stucco on both sides of the alley. Soon, the stucco will be decorated in a bicycle motif designed by volunteer Chris Heisterkamp, who headed up the project. All of the picnic tables were painted red during the work bees.
The wrought iron fences along the sidewalk will be set back 10 feet and bicycle racks now at other locations around the courthouse square will be moved in front of the fence. The goal of the project is to create a venue that will draw bicyclists from the Raccoon River Valley Trail to the downtown area, and to have the work finished before the Pedaler’s Jamboree Sept. 5.
Doc’s Stadium has an easement on the alley, and the only access to Doc’s Alley is through Doc’s Stadium.
